It is with great pride that our kura can announce that Mrs Bryony Edwards, teacher of Photography and Design has won the prestigious National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) – Apple Award, for secondary teachers in New Zealand.
NEiTA is the longest-standing community-driven awards program dedicated to recognising teaching excellence in Australia and New Zealand. The Apple Award recognises teachers who exceed expectations – the unsung heroes. This year was the 30th anniversary of the awards and was held at The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. Bryony was one of nearly 1000 teachers from across New Zealand and Australia to be nominated (an amazing feat in itself). From nomination there is a process of gathering information and a judging panel convenes for a decision. We are absolutely delighted to see that of the two secondary teachers awarded Bryony was the only kiwi teacher.
Bryony has taught at John Paul College for 6 years, and in Rotorua schools since 1997. She is celebrated for her dynamic, personalised teaching approach that inspires students to excel in the arts. One of her key priorities for Bryony in the classroom, is to connect with her ākonga, allowing them to feel seen and valued. Known for her warmth and dedication, Bryony creates a safe learning environment making her a truly outstanding educator.
Bryony received a $5,000 professional development grant and would like to thank the NEiTA Foundation for the recognition and Futurity Investments for their support. She says “I am extremely honoured to receive this award. We teachers work the extra hours and go the extra mile to enhance and enrich our students’ learning, and we don’t expect such recognition, but it feels wonderful to be validated and appreciated. I am truly grateful”.
Upon her arrival home, the entire John Paul College student body and staff celebrated Bryony’s success with a full Haka pōwhiri (along with being piped in by a former student). Needless to say that Bryony was humbled and reflected the honour back onto her colleges, students and the wider school community.
This is an amazing result and truly reflective of all the work Bryony puts into her students. Our most sincere congratulations to a truly outstanding teacher, an inspiration to her colleagues and source of encouragement to her students.
