This weekend a group of 15 students travelled to Campion College in Gisborne to represent John Paul College in the annual Inter Catholic-College Hamilton Diocese Cultural Competition “Chanel Shield”. The competition is focused on speeches, drama, the Bible and debates. All of the students were excellent ambassadors for the college and many new friendships were formed with students from the other four colleges, Campion, Aquinas, Sacred Heart and St Johns. We had a good deal of success managing to win five of the eleven events and come second in a further four. This meant that once again, John Paul College came away with the Chanel Shield.
Results from the weekend were:
Ella Broadley was 1st in Senior Oratory
Carys Chapman-Vari, 1st in the Impromptu Speech
Sophia Choi, 1st in Senior Poetry
Harrison Roberts-Brake, 1st in Junior Speech
Demi Yang, 2nd in Junior Poetry.
Alan Antony, 2nd in Junior Bible Reading
Nishali Patel, 2nd in the Senior Bible Reading
Jorgia Hubbard inspired with her Maori Perspective Speech.
Our Drama team, Carys Chapman-Vari, Hollie Cooke, Logan Potae, Leo Schweizer and Tate Tisdall and Ella Broadley came 1st, whilst our Debating Team, April Vanner (Captain), Leo Schweizer and Samuel Fox came a hard fought 2nd.
The whole group led by Naina Michael, our Bible Quiz specialist came 3rd in the Bible quiz against 5 schools.
Congratulations to all the team. Thank you to the teachers involved Mrs Thurstan and Mr Bloomfield and to Mr Satherley for driving all of us there and back, and supporting the team. We were also lucky that Mr Harper came to the competition and spent the weekend supporting the team.
