Chess Success!

Monday, June 27th, 2022 in News.

The JPC Chess Club has been meeting after school on Mondays, with new coach, Mr. Nick
Gentle. Students also play during lunchtimes, for coaching and practice for this year’s
nationals, which are in Rotorua.
The Intermediate Team (yr 7 and 8) has competed in two regional interschool competitions
and has won them both, with several strong individual performances highlighting how much
depth we have in our team.

Taupo Regionals on 1 Jun 2022 Team JPC 1st
Individual:

Jo Gentle – 2nd
Carl Delos Santos – 3rd
Jack Zhang – 4th

Top Girl: Ann Mariya Joseph

Rotorua Regionals – 21 Jun 2022 Team JPC 1st

With our team of 8 players, we took out the top 8 places in a field of 32, an incredible result.

Outside the top two players, one of whom won all 7 of his games, and the other had 6 wins
and a draw, most of our players were only separated from each other by a tie-breaker.
Everybody deserves recognition for such a comprehensive performance.

Our team has already qualified for the team national finals, and through strong results,
already have 7 players qualified for the individual national finals, which will be contested on
consecutive days in October.

Chess Success!

Let’s not forget our strong team members, who just missed qualifying for the
nationals such as ROBERT KC KHATRI.
We must also applaud the great performances
from REBECCA KC KHATRI, LUKE MILLIKEN, TOBY TRUONG, CHARLES MEURISSE,
MAX SLACK, ALLAN HUANG, KEVIN WU, DANIELA SLACK & BELLA BREEZE. While
Daniela and Bella are only Year 7, Bella caused upsets by beating players more highly
ranked than her! YAY!

A big thanks to the students, Coach Nick Gentle, Ms. Monsalves, Mrs. Slack and Coach
Nunilon Fulo.
If you are interested in having a go at chess, you can be completely new at it. It doesn’t
